xinjiang saga – Kashgar

Kashgar….

last western frontier of china… a few hundred kilometers from pakistan, tajikistan and afghanistan, this chinese city is like no other chinese city, or maybe like no other city anywhere else. Inside its ancient walls, you feel like you could be anywhere in the middle east or in central  asia. Cart market, central mosque, carpet sellers, lamb head freshly cut out on the side of the road, and an overall yellowish atmosphere reflecting the traditional architecture.

But this beautiful city is under the threat of modernisation. High rise building are pushing through and a big statue of Mao just outside the walls of the old city reminds all the locals who is behind the wheel…
