In this week end edition of Le Monde, two portraits of young french residing in Shanghai talking about their vision of France.
As a summer series, Le Monde is portraying some young expatriates around the world. I portrayed Alberto, a Italian Set Designer who arrived in Shanghai a year ago. The portrait is “cliche” but its part of the direction of this small summer series.

The Financial Times is doing audio slideshows about foreigner living and working in different cities around the world. I followed Josh Noble, hong kong based journalist to interview three shanghai expats. This slideshow is about shanghai and their lives within:

Special Side Economical Issue on China and its State Capitalism. This is part of my Urban Landscape collection exhibited at the Carte Blanche Gallerie in San Francisco
As football player Nicolas Anelka is the first sport celebrity to transfer in China, it is exiting to follow what will become of the football world in the middle country. Formally known for being arranged by bookmakers and highly corrupted, the chinese football association is trying to catch a second breath. On saturday the 10′th of march, we followed Ding Ding, the president of the Shanghai Shenhua fan club to the opening match of the 2012 season. Surrounded by high security ( both police and army ) the fans were very organized, queuing to get inside the stadium. Even though it resultated as a draw ( 1-1 ) and Anelka did not play, the fans cheered their team with new songs to the sound of the french anthem and became ecstatic at any signs of possible goals. This series relate the atmosphere behind the goal, where the shenhua fans seats are located.

With the announcement of Nicolas Anelka signing up for Shenhua Shanghai club, both chinese and international media are looking towards Chinese football. With recent years of very low level, embarrassing stories and fixed match, Chinese football is trying to catch a second breath. The recent signature of Jean Tigana ( below photos ) as the new coach of the team is confirming chinese intention in getting football level to an higher standards in China.
A few weeks ago, i got commissioned by Le Point to shoot their cover for an issue about Shanghai. As they first wanted something else than the eternal bund view, i took upon shooting this portrait from the new cool docks area. I was quite satisfied with the result but the editor came back at the last minute with a “montage” of my shot with the classic bund view. Probably to make sure to get the shanghai symbol on the frame.

When I first arrived in shanghai in 2005, I lived in the Jing’An district. The district is located around a Jing’An temple, a modern temple located around a luxurious shopping mall. At that time, everything south of the temple was made of old 1980′s building where small shops and restaurants could be found. In a little more than 5 years, this whole stretch has become a giant construction site for luxurious hotel and high rise buildings. Looking it back at the past, I am having a hard time even remembering how this district looked exactly when I first arrived. As the district is still in construction, it is amazing to observe how shanghai is rising vertically.
